Dog Reactivity: Why Walks Feel So Hard (and How to Help Your Dog)

Do you feel anxious just thinking about taking your dog for a walk? Do you dread passing that house because you know your dog is going to bark and lunge? Are you worried people are judging you every time your dog "loses it" on the lead?

You're not alone. One of the most common questions I'm asked is:

"How do I stop my dog barking at other dogs?"

    What Is Reactivity?

Reactivity is when a dog overreacts to a trigger — like another dog, a person, or even a moving object. For many dogs, the most common trigger is other dogs, especially while on leash. These reactions often look like barking, lunging, growling, whining, or pulling.

So why does it happen? Let's break it down. Most reactive behaviour comes from big feelings — and those big feelings usually fall into one of two categories: fear or frustration.

    01Fear-Based Reactivity

Some dogs are genuinely scared of other dogs. Maybe they had a bad experience, or maybe they just weren't exposed to enough dogs as a puppy. Either way, they feel unsafe.

When we're scared, our bodies go into fight or flight mode. Dogs are the same — but when they're on a leash, flight isn't an option, so many dogs choose "fight" instead. That might look like barking or growling to make the scary thing go away.

They're not being "bad." They're saying: "I feel uncomfortable. Please give me space."

    02Frustration-Based Reactivity

Other dogs react for the opposite reason — they're too excited! These dogs love other dogs and want to say hi. But when they're held back on leash, they can get frustrated and overwhelmed.

Instead of calmly waiting, they start to bark, pull, and lunge — not because they're aggressive, but because they're desperate to interact.

They're saying: "I see a friend! Let me go! I really want to play!"

    03A Mix of Both

Some dogs are both frustrated and fearful. They might want to interact but feel unsure at the same time. This can make their reactions even more unpredictable or confusing to their humans.

    A Personal Story

I used to feel stressed walking my own dog down the street. As soon as I saw another dog up ahead, I'd tense up. I'd pull the leash tighter, move my dog to the side, and try to get past as quickly as possible. The whole situation felt overwhelming.

I was just a child at the time and didn't really understand what was happening — I thought it was just "little dog syndrome." In reality, my dog was having big feelings, and so was I! Now, with more understanding and the right tools, I know it doesn't have to be that way.

The Good News: Reactivity Can Be Improved

With kind, force-free training, we can help reactive dogs learn new coping strategies and feel safer in the world. Whether your dog is barking out of fear or excitement, we can teach them how to stay calm and look to you for guidance instead of reacting.

    • You don't have to avoid walks forever.
    • You don't have to feel embarrassed or alone.
    • And your dog doesn't have to stay stuck in those big feelings.

Help is out there — and it starts with understanding.

Ready to help your dog feel more confident on walks? I offer one-on-one training tailored specifically for reactive dogs. Together, we'll build your dog's confidence, improve leash skills, and help both of you enjoy walks again.
